Tax Relief Company Complaints: Tax Defense Network Reports

December 30, 2011

When taxpayers are struggling with IRS debt, they are looking for tax professionals to help them resolve their problems not take advantage of their vulnerability. Yet, there are sharks in the water that are just waiting. When they spot a person in trouble that isn’t aware of their tactics, they strike.

Common Complaints: Tax Defense Network List

Due to the increasing volume of tax relief companies receiving client complaints, Tax Defense Network compiled a list of the most common grievances clients make against these companies, so that taxpayers know what to look out for when choosing a company for tax debt relief.

  1. False Advertising
This is by far the highest number of client complaints Tax Defense Network came across. Companies charged with false advertising complaints include American Tax Relief, and Roni Deutch, both of which have since been shut down by the Licensed Tax Professional General of California. The false advertising complaints Tax Defense Network uncovered was the classic “bait and switch” scam, where these companies would “reel” in taxpayers with promises of “pennies on the dollar” tax settlements, and then “switch” the taxpayers to a standard payment agreement once they became clients.
  2. Billing Complaints
Tax Defense Network found this to be quite unsettling, but many ex-clients of J.K. Harris had complaints of being double-billed for services or having hidden fees introduced in the middle of their resolution process.
  3. Refusal of Refund Complaints
Tax Defense Network advises all taxpayers looking for tax relief not to hire a company without a concrete refund policy. Roni Deutch was the main proponent of this scheme, but other tax relief companies have been known to refuse a refund to taxpayers who no longer want their professional services.
  4. High Pressure Sales Tactics
While sales pressure is certainly not illegal, pressuring clients into signing legal contracts is not good business. Tax Defense Network saw complaints of these sales methods from every tax relief company mentioned so far on this list, including Tax Masters.

The complaints mentioned are not the only complaints Tax Defense Network found. After looking at each company’s Better Business Bureau profile, any public information on lawsuits brought against them and the online complaint boards, we found American Tax Relief, Roni Deutch, J.K. Harris, and Tax Masters had a laundry list of items clients have complained about.

How Tax Defense Network Handles Complaints

While it is true that you cannot please everyone, clients should have an understanding of how a business conducts itself. We at Tax Defense Network take complaints seriously and have set-up a Gold Star Client Care Department to handle taxpayers who are not 100% satisfied with our services. We aim to give all of our clients an ideal experience when working with us.

For the 15 years we have been in business, our goal has been to quickly and effectively help taxpayers drowning in tax debt. However, there are tax relief businesses that have tarnished the trust between the American taxpayer and the tax debt relief industry by taking advantage of their clients with advertising and billing scams, causing their clients to have serious and legitimate complaints.

Tax Defense Network is in business to help taxpayers, so we won’t take you on as a client unless we can put you in a better position with the IRS, and that’s a promise!
