Tax Defense Network Inc. represents clients who, for whatever reason, have state or federal tax troubles.

“We help come up with a resolution that fits the taxpayer’s ability to pay and that meets [the agency’s] requirement to collect,” said Frank Valinho, vice president and co-owner of the company with his brother, Joe.

The company first incorporated in 1997 as New Start Credit Services. The Valinhos bought it in 2007, adopting the Tax Defense Network name and a new strategy to grow the company nationally.

The IRS estimates most taxpayers, 84 percent, are in compliance, but those who don’t pay what they owe cause a tax collection gap of nearly $400 billion annually. “They have added 1,500 revenue officers this year to address that gap,” President Joe Valinho said.

The company now conducts 4,000 new client consultations per month with people across the country, many of whom become clients. In fact, Tax Defense Network boasts an average annual revenue growth of 289.66 percent from 2007 to 2009 and is No. 8 among 10 companies being honored for top dollar-volume revenue growth.

The company has grown so fast it has moved four times in three years. It will double its space when the company moves again to a new, 24,000-square-foot office at the end of the year. “There are a lot of businesses out there like them and you see them advertising on TV,” said Neal Von Stein, a CPA and managing partner of The LBA Group. “Others in their industry don’t usually have a good Better Business Bureau rating, but they do.”

Tax Defense Network has 120 employees including licensed tax professionals, licensed tax professionals such as CPAs, and federally authorized enrolled agents. Their client base is a mix of 60 percent individual taxpayers and 40 percent businesses. All clients are treated with the Valinhos’ FIRE and ICE business philosophy.

“They aren’t going to go in with a $100,000 bill and get away paying $1,” Frank Valinho said. “That’s not what we sell. We make sure clients are ‘Fully Informed and have Reasonable Expectations.’ [Then] you want to build your company on ICE, the ‘Ideal Client Experience.’ ”

“As goofy as that sounds,” Joe Valinho said, “that’s really the secret to our success.”
