Washington has a state sales tax rate of 6.5%. Local governments may levy up to an additional 4.1% in sales taxes. On average, residents pay 8.86% in sales tax, which is one of the highest rates in the country. Groceries and prescription drugs, however, are tax-exempt.

Washington Property Taxes

Washington has one of the highest average property tax rates in the country. On average, residents pay around $2,631 per year (based on a median home price of $287,200). King County has the highest average property tax at $3,572, while Ferry County has the lowest at $941.
