August is a busy month for many people. Kids head back to school and college. It’s also peak season for hurricanes and other weather-related issues. To help ease the financial burden, many states offer tax-free holidays. And best of all, it applies to both in-store and online sales. Connecticut

Sales Tax-Free Week, August 17-23, 2025

Florida

Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, August 1-31, 2025

Iowa

Annual Sales Tax Holiday, August 1-2, 2025

No sales tax is collected for eligible items purchased on the first Friday and Saturday of August.

What’s Included:

  • Clothing and footwear, priced less than $100 per item

Maryland

Tax-Free Week, August 10-16, 2025

Beginning at 12.01 a.m. on the second Sunday of August, running through the following Saturday at midnight, eligible items are exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales tax.

What’s Included:

  • Clothing and footwear, priced at $100 or less
  • Backpacks and book bags, no more than $40 total

Massachusetts

Sales Tax Holiday, August 9-10, 2025

During the sales tax holiday weekend, most retail items priced at $2,500 or less are exempt from state sales tax.

Missouri

  • Personal computers and peripheral devices, less than $1,500 per item
  • Computer software, $350 or less

Ohio

Sales Tax Holiday, August 1-14, 2025

Held from midnight on August 1 until 11:59 p.m. on August 14, nearly all tangible personal property priced at $500 or less is tax-free.

Virginia

Sales Tax Holiday, August 1-3, 2025

Qualifying items purchased in-store, online, by mail, or phone during the holiday are exempt from state sales tax.

  • School supplies, $20 or less
  • Portable generators, $1,000 or less
  • Chainsaws, $350 or less

West Virginia
