IRS Notice LT19 – Outstanding Balance Reminder

IRS LT19 is a demand for payment that is sent when a taxpayer has not addressed their outstanding tax balance with the IRS. Failure to respond to this letter may result in the escalation of collection actions, including wage garnishment, tax liens, and levies.

Why Did I Receive IRS LT19?

You received IRS LT19 because you still owe the IRS money, and you’ve likely already received one or more letters or notices alerting you to the unpaid balance.

Next Steps

Carefully review your LT19 and save a copy for your records. It will include a breakdown of the taxes due, including interest and penalty fees. The newer versions also include a section showing your monthly payment if you set up an installment agreement. It also includes a QR code for quick access to pay your balance online or set up the payment plan.

If you agree with the amount due:

  • Pay the amount in full
  • If you can’t pay in full, you may qualify for a payment plan or other tax relief.
  • If you paid your balance within the last 21 days, disregard the notice.

If you disagree with the total due:

  • You can dispute the tax amount if you believe it is incorrect. If you can’t reach an agreement with the IRS, you can request a hearing with the Office of Appeals.
